Title: A Conversation with Molly Crabapple
Abstract: In this webinar, the author Molly Crabapple will discuss her book Here Where We Live Is Our Country. This is the story of a revolutionary movement – the Jewish Bund – which played a part in nearly every major conflict in Eastern Europe from 1900-1945, but still remains an almost unknown part of twentieth-century history.
The movement’s central philosophy of “hereness” – the belief that Jews had a right to freedom and dignity in the countries where they lived – led them to fight the Tsar, reject Zionism, resist the Nazis, and ultimately help lead the Warsaw ghetto revolt. It is also a philosophy that immediately resonates with the political situation all over the world today.
In this book, Molly Crabapple tells the story of the Bund through the lives of the bold and brilliant individuals who were pivotal to carrying out the doctrine, including her own great-grandfather, through whom she first discovered the movement.
Bio: Molly Crabapple is an artist and writer based in New York. She is the author of New York Times bestselling work of anti-Zionist history, Here Where We Live is Our Country: The Story of the Jewish Bund. Her previous book, Brothers of the Gun (with Marwan Hisham), was longlisted for a National Book Award. Her reportage is the 2022 winner of the Bernhard Labor Journalism Award, and has been published in The New York Times, New York Review of Books, The Paris Review, Vanity Fair, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and elsewhere. Her art is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, and her animations have won two Emmys and an Edward R. Murrow Award. She was a 2023 Cullman Center Fellow at the New York Public Library.
